An SSL certificate is a digital signature of your website. It guarantees a secure connection between the server and the user's browser. When using it, information between the site and the browser is transmitted in encrypted form and can only be decrypted using a special key, which is part of the certificate.
Even if the website name is entered correctly in the browser, attackers can replace it entirely or in parts (for example, by intercepting traffic in public networks - subway, cafes or business centers). In this way, fraudsters can gain access to customer data, place their banners or payment forms on your website. SSL certificates rule out such events: by checking the certificate, the user can be sure that the domain is tied to the real website and not its fake copy. Furthermore, SSL certificates allow users to check who the owner of the website is. It means that the users can be sure that they are visiting the website of the actual company and not its clone's website. Another important feature of SSL certificates is the internet connection encryption. Encrypted connection is required to prevent potential theft of confidential data transferred via the internet.
When choosing a certificate, you need to answer several questions:
- How many domain names do you want to protect: one or more.
- What kind of service do you want to protect: if you are protecting financial data, it is better to use a certificate with extended verification. To protect customer data in an online store, it is better to use certificates with organization and domain verification.
After payment, the order for issuing a certificate is sent to the certification authority for processing. Verification of the provided data may take some time (usually no more than two days). After the certificate is issued, a notification with a link to the page in your personal account where the certificate can be retrieved will be sent to the e-mail address specified in the order.
