VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) is a virtual dedicated server that gives the administrator full control over the operating system and server resources.
A virtual server with Linux allows you to utilize the powerful features and flexibility of the Linux operating system for a variety of purposes such as website hosting, application deployment, database creation, and more. You can manage the server through the command line, install and customize software.
In the English-speaking community, VPS and VDS concepts are synonymous and mean the same thing — a server running in a virtual environment. The confusion in the terms arose because of the translation into Russian and small differences in the subtleties of these technologies. VPS means a virtual private server. VDS means a virtual dedicated server. In both cases, the user gets the same features: configuring the server as an administrator, installing the operating system, uploading websites and files, and working with databases.
Unlike regular website hosting where you share resources with other users on a single physical server, a virtual linux server gives you dedicated resources and the ability to install and customize the operating system of your choice.
The choice of an operating system (OS) depends on requirements for software to be installed on the VPS.
On Linux VPS we offer CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, FreeBSD and Gentoo. After purchase, the operating system can be reinstalled automatically from the control panel.
If you have no experience with server OS, we recommend choosing a plan with the ispmanager control panel.
If you need a Windows operating system, please use Windows VDS on Hyper-V.
VPS plans should be chosen depending on the requirements of the software, recommendations of technical experts and the purpose of VDS. General overview:
SSD-1 — cheap VDS hosting for testing purposes.
SSD-2 and SSD-3 — low rates that are suitable for hosting one or more small websites, such as company websites;
SSD-4, SSD-5, SSD-6 — plans designed for hosting a large number of websites or sites with high traffic, such as online stores;
SSD-7, SSD-8 — plans for projects that have special requirements to reliability and performance (government agencies, financial sector companies).
You can connect to a VPS through a virtual console — it is similar to the terminal connected to the server. It is available directly in the VDS control panel, the Console section. For remote access via SSH, you can connect to the server using PuTTY software. Details on how to connect are sent in the information letter to the contact e-mail when activating the service.
ispmanager and cPanel are convenient control panels developed for managing a server and hosting via a user-friendly interface. It allows a VDS administrator to:
— host an unlimited number of websites on the VDS;
— install and configure the required software;
— create databases and users for them;
— add FTP users, upload and download files via web-interface;
— configure mail on the domain, create mailboxes;
— manage website backups and much more.
The SSD-1 price plan is suitable for the minimum, but recommended panel requirements. For experienced administrators, cPanel and ispmanager licenses are available for order and self-installation on any configuration.
All the servers are located in a Moscow-based data center. The Russian data center is designed in accordance with a Tier-3 level of the TIA-942 data center standard, equipped with high-bandwidth channels, and connected directly to MSK-IX internet exchange point.
